How to read this

Height is the annualised yield a US Treasury security of that maturity paid on that day. The near edge is short-dated debt, the far edge is the 30‑year bond. Recessions fall across the surface as shade.

Reconstructed data. The Treasury stopped issuing the 30‑year bond between February 2002 and February 2006, and did not publish a 1‑month rate before July 2001. Those gaps are filled by interpolation so the surface stays continuous, and shaded paler where that has happened.

Yields: US Department of the Treasury. Policy rate, balance sheet, term premium, NASDAQ, VIX, unemployment and recession dating: Federal Reserve Economic Data, St. Louis Fed. S&P 500 closing prices from 1982.
